Twitter is being spammed by Black Hat SEO’s to drive traffic to their websites, twitter profiles and blogs.  This is ruining the social media phenomenon and taking away from the community building that is responsible for Twitter’s recent rise in popularity.

I am seeing this more and more lately, and wanted to point out some of the less than savory tactics that are being used by these “Black Birds” so that you can spot them when they come to be your “Friend”.   This is in no way intended to be a list of tips, so the focus will be on some of the more obvious tricks that are currently being used, and I’ll stay away from some of the lesser known tactics.

Twitter Rocks

I love Twitter.  There it is, I’ve finally become a full twitter addict and it has virtually replaced all of my other forms of social media.  I still use Facebook to keep up with friends, and I still participate in the other social sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn and a myriad of others, but Twitter has become the standard for my social activity.

Why do I love Twitter so much?  There are several reasons but those listed below are the 5 main reasons I think Twitter is ‘Da Bomb!  I encourage you to leave a comment on the reasons you love (or hate) Twitter.

Yahoo! Rich Ads in Search

Yahoo Search Marketing recently announced that they are launching their Rich Ads in Search program with a few household names to test the integration of video and images into the Paid Search Results. They are calling this program Rich Ads in Search, and it allows an advertiser to place images, video and custom search boxes into the paid search ad.

Woo Themes

WooThemes, who designed the custom WordPress theme for HighPoint, has released the Ultimate Icon Set for free downloads to WooThemes members.  These are great looking icons that can be downloaded for free and added to any blog.   They are licensed under Creative Commons, so they can be used on any blog or website.

Pondering SEO in 2009

Last night I pondered the future of Search Engine Optimization, particularly the effects of Universal Search and it’s full implementation, and while some of these changes have already started to show, yet others have yet to be fully implemented.

I came up with a list of 5 primary attributes that I feel will be essential to SEO in 2009. If your site is struggling to rank and get visitors, implementing these items in your site may help it rise from the ashes.  Conversely, if your site is ranking well, but you continue to exclude them, you may lose your high ranking position, and it won’t take long.

Click Fraud Increasing

If you have been reading our blog you can easily see that we are not big fans of Pay Per Click advertising.  We rarely write about PPC, and in general we don’t recommend it to our clients, other than to supplement a Search Engine Optimization campaign.  It’s not that we don’t believe it has value in some situations, but our philosophy is that Paid Search Campaigns can be a good supplement to a Search Engine Optimization, especially in the early stages, but over the long term it is not as effective or efficient as a good Search Engine Optimization campaign.
